Writing

I write to show the way forward, mostly on the topic of making life better while advancing climate action.

Some recent pieces:

✓ Guest Column: To find money, shift how Boulder does transportation. Yellow Scene, March 2024.

✓ Guest Opinion: Colorado’s new climate roadmap is a resource for Boulder, Daily Camera, February 2024.

✓ Newsletter: Ryan’s Review: A monthly update from Ryan Schuchard on Boulder City Council. Published monthly since December 2023.

I’ve been writing blog articles, issue briefs, and white papers since around 2007, published by BSR, CALSTART, Climate Reality Project, Greenbiz, Mother Jones, US EPA, and other places for professionals managing public issues and sustainability.

I’ve written and co-written more formal pieces, like book chapters (in Global Corruption Report: Climate Change by Transparency International, Corporate Climate Responses to Climate Change by Greenleaf Publishing, Carbon Trading: Some Insights and Perspectives by Icfai Press), a module for a college textbook (Operations Management: An Asian Perspective by McGraw Hull), and a scholarly journal article (Journal of Supply Chain Management).

And I’ve led communications for advocacy campaigns to successfully secure public policies and investments. Such as coalition-supported filings for California’s most important state regulators (i.e., Air Resources Board, Public Utilities Commission, Energy Commission), reports analyzing industries for climate solutions and what they need to grow, and briefing materials for lobbying state legislators.

Related, I’ve developed a series of position briefs for local issues as part of my campaign to run for City Council (affordability, climate, housing, homelessness, inclusion, transportation, and safety)—a set of ideas which is now in the process of becoming adopted public policies.

I have a track record of getting things done as a team, co-writing while working with editors and partners. I enjoy collaborating with a wide variety of others, from academics to industry folks to issue advocates.
